Scorpions are one of St. George, UT’s most feared pests. This fear is derived from their menacing appearance, and their ability to sting injecting poisonous venom. This fear has led to a few popular myths about these St. George pests:
Scorpions are aggressive. Scorpions are not malevolent pests that hunt down people they want to sting. They are actually very cautious, shy, and timid. Most people get stung by scorpions when they unintentionally step on them, stick their hands or feet into places that act as shelter for scorpions (such as under rocks, under debris, etc.) or when someone purposely handles them.

Scorpions love living inside our homes. This statement is only partially true. Scorpions are wild creatures in nature that prefer to hunt for insects in their natural habitat. Sometimes they will come into our homes in search of water.
Scorpions can breathe underwater. When you go out for a swim, you don’t have to be afraid of a scorpion finding you in the water… They actually can’t live underwater. It is true that scorpions can hold their breath for a several minutes.
Scorpions love trees. If you have trees on your property, there is a chance that you have a few scorpions. It’s not the trees that scorpions love, but they way they are irrigated and watered that draw them in. Scorpions need water to survive, and they thrive when there is standing water that frequents tree bases.
