The Facts About Cockroaches
Cockroaches are older then dirt. Fossils show that roaches have been around at least 300 million years, looking as ugly then as they do now. These hardy, homely insects have outlived dinosaurs, endured the Ice Age, survived world wars, and will probably be around long after the human race is gone.
Cockroaches eat just about everything, except poison. As omnivorous insects, roaches feed on whatever they fancy. Their favorite foods include a few of yours—sugary sweets, salty snacks, meats, cheeses, and other treats. They’ll also munch on book bindings, dead bugs, blood, doggie doo, and other disgusting things. Taste hairs on the cockroaches’ head let it sample food first. Anything that tastes like poison is automatically rejected.
Cockroaches love the night. Dark, cramped quarters are cockroaches’ favorite hideouts. At night fall, they slip through cracks in the walls and floor in search of something to eat. They can fit through openings as thin as a dime.
Cockroaches get turned on by warm weather. Summertime is the roaches’ favorite season. They thrive in the heat. Once temperatures dip below 50 degrees, these coldblooded bugs die or go into hibernation. As things warm up they go back to feeding and breeding.
Cockroaches become resistant to insecticides. Over the years, roaches have developed a resistance to insecticides that once were very effective. As a result, the poisons had less effect on each succeeding generation. Ineffective spraying can also contribute to resistance, allowing tougher roaches to survive and pass on more tolerant genes.
